We made friends with a broker, who looked at us sadly when we told him what we wanted to do and said, "You poor kids." I guess the suede boots (me) and high-maintenance beehive (Nancy) didn't convince him that we were ready.

We spent a wonderful year boat shopping, wandering through boat shows with eyes glazed with dreams. (The two martini lunches may have contributed to that.) Soon financial reality brought us down into the used boat market. We'd just about settle on a perfect boat when another of our adult children would decide he or she wanted to go with us, which meant we would need more space. More space meant an older boat, wood instead of fiberglass, all of which finally led us to Sea Foam.
